Windows update and excessive data consumption are some of the factors affecting PC (laptop) usage in Africa.

Nigeria, a West African country is one of the worst when it comes to free data (WIFI), internet accessibility. This is due to the fact that internet services are expensive in this country.

The governments in the other hand are not doing enough to curtail this disturbing issue.

Today we will be discussing on ways to stop windows update and excessive data consumption on windows like 7, 8 and 10.

Below are some of the best ways to curtail windows update and excessive data consumption:

1. Using Windows Services:

Simply press Windows key + R. Then type services.msc, then hit Enter. From the list of services locate windows update and double click on it, then change from manual or automatic update to disabled.

2. Pause Windows Updates:

This feature also consumes too much of data when active. Below is what you do to disable this feature;

1st step: Open window settings.

2nd step: Click on update and security.

3rd step: Click on windows update.

4th step: Click on advance options.

5th step: In the “update options” just select the button under “Pause updates” and set the duration for which the updates will be paused as shown in below screenshot:

4. Turn off Microsoft store update:

In this step you can turn off the Microsoft store update by following these below steps:

1st step: Simply open Microsoft store.

2nd step: Click on accounts.

3rd step: Set off the button under “App updates” as shown in below screenshot:

4th step: Select off under “sync settings” as shown in below screenshot:

5. Disable Settings Synchronization

In this process you can disable the synchronization of your machine with the cloud. To do so please follow below steps:

1st step: Open window settings.

2nd step: Click on accounts.

3rd step: Click on Sync your settings.

4th step: Select off under “sync settings” as shown in below screenshot:

6. Restrict Background Applications from Using Data

You can easily and specifically restrict selected applications from using data in the background. To do this please follow below steps:

1st step: Open window settings.

2nd step: Click on privacy.

3rd step: Click on app permissions.

4th step: Simply Select the apps you want to stop from running in the background from the “background apps” section as shown in below screenshot:

7. Turn off Background Data usages

If you want to restrict the usage of data by background applications which is not in use currently can also reduce data consumption on a limited network. To do this please follow below steps:

1st step: Open Window Settings

2nd step: Click on Network & Internet.

3rd step: Click on data usage.

4th step: Under the Background data section you can simply set limit on data usages by the Windows and store app features as shown in below screenshot:

8. Set Data Limit

1st step: Open windows settings.

2nd step: Click on network and internet.

3rd step: Click on data usage.

4th step: In this regard, simply select the wireless or wired network adapter from the “show settings” menu as per your requirement.

5th step: Simply, set the limit on the data usages by clicking the set limit button under the “data limit”.

6th step: Select the limit type which ranges from monthly, one time, and unlimited. Then set the data limit and then click on the save button.

This will automatically set your network adapter as metered and pause other activities like backup.

Note: 1. This steps works mostly on Windows 10.
